Brief about Dr.Nishantha Nanayakkara
Dr. Nishantha Nanayakkara is a senior lecturer to Electrical Engineering department of University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka since April 1995, and the President of Grid connected small hydro power developers association since 2003. He obtained his MSc and PhD degrees on power system control from Saga University, Japan.
Dr. Nanayakkara and his subordinators have completed twelve village hydro power projects, giving electricity to 1300 households in total, and 10 grid connected mini hydro power projects in Sri Lanka with total installed capacity of 21 MW during last ten years. This includes all designs, full feasibility, project management procurement of machinery & final commissioning in addition to sourcing funds for projects. The important development criterion adopted in project implementation is the maximization of local technical capacity and know-how, cost optimization techniques in project management and designs of structures, procurement of imported equipment from various reputed manufacturers and do the assembly by local engineers, address the social and environmental concerns, and proper risk assessment and risk mitigation subject to project costing.
Dr. Nanayakkara has been a UNIDO consultant since 2004 to Rwanda and Burundi in East Africa, in this capacity of building and implementation of hydro power projects. His team has already implemented 3 small hydro power projects and another eight projects are under construction.
Apart from his services to the University and hydro power sector, he serves as the Director of Clothing Industry Training Institute (CITI), the Director of Textiles Training and Services Centre (TT&SC), President of Small Hydro Power Developers Association (SHPDA), since 2003. He has delivered several important public lectures on the issues of energy sector and related policies.
